I am a UT Austin graduate, a former Peace Corps Volunteer in Guinea, an Appalachian Trail thru-hiker in 2003, the inventor of Rubber Rubberband Man(TM) and Rubber Rubberband Dog(TM), a game and puzzle designer (GAMES, Knucklebones, NPR's Weekend Edition), and a writer (Missoula's Missoulian newspaper, Helena's Independent Record, and the above). I have walked the entire outline of Texas and biked from Texas to California and back. Haiti is not technically an island nation. It shares an island.

Yes, Haiti and the Dominican Republic share the island of Hispaniola. For lack of a better term, I called Haiti an "island nation" because it is a nation on an island, not a continent.
